AFFI Endorses Pritzker

As many of you know, the AFFI was the first statewide union to endorse JB Pritzker for Governor in the democratic primary. I was very proud to stand with JB in Peoria back in May to announce our support.

The AFFI membership has a diverse set of political views on a variety of issues, but I hope we can all agree on the need to defend our benefits and rights by defeating Bruce Rauner in the November 6th General Election.

JB is the best candidate to do this, which is why the AFFI has turned out hundreds of members across the state to work for JB and his pro-worker agenda.

Unlike Governor Rauner’s proposals to strip collective bargaining rights for firefighters resulting in lower wages and benefits, JB supports collective bargaining and believes higher wages for workers is good for our state’s economy.

JB believes in safe workplaces and supports the many statutory protections we have for professional firefighters in Illinois. Conversely, Governor Rauner has proposed removing the firefighter occupational disease presumptions in the work comp law and eliminating the Public Safety Employee Benefit Act that provides health insurance for firefighters who are catastrophically injured in the line of duty.

While Governor Rauner has proposed slashing public employee pensions, including firefighters, JB has repeatedly stated his opposition to doing so.

Please join me in voting for JB Pritzker and the other #AFFIendorsed candidates on Tuesday so we can defeat Bruce Rauner in November.

- AFFI President Pat Devaney

Thanks to Aurora Fire #99 Brother Hess for attending the AFFI MDA Boot Camp! Firefighter/Paramedic Hess has been instrumental in the program for the last 5 years.
With Brother Hess’s help, the Aurora Firefighters Association L#99 and the Aurora Fire Department together have raised nearly $150,000 for MDA over the last 10 years.
Most importantly thanks to the compassionate citizens and visitors of Aurora. We will be looking forward to their continued support in early September during Fill The Boot.

PAC @ Work!

It has been a busy month for PAC. Members spent 3 days in Springfield at the 18th Annual Fran Grambro Legislative Conference. During our trip the team spoke with many of the lawmakers that represent Aurora. Legislators from both the House and Senate, the State Treasurer, the Comptroller, and other officials took time from their schedule to talk. The team also attended seminars and lectures provided by the AFFI.
In the weeks that followed our members have showed up to support AFFI endorsed Local #4032 firefighter Jim Leslie who is running for the 50th seat in the House. Our team has knocked on approximately 500 doors!

The Maltese Cross

The Maltese Cross

The badge of a firefighter is the Maltese Cross. This Maltese Cross is a symbol of protection and a badge of honor. Its story is hundreds of years old.

When a courageous band of crusaders known as the Knights of St. John fought the Saracens for possession of the Holy Land, they encountered a new weapon unknown to European warriors. Its wrought excruciating pain and agonizing death upon the brave fighters for the cross. The Saracen’s weapon was fire.

As the crusaders advanced on the wall of the city, they were struck by glass bombs containing naphtha. When they became saturated with the highly flammable liquid, the Saracens hurled flaming torches into their midst. Hundreds of the Knights were burned alive; others risked their lives to save their brother-in-arms from dying painful, fiery deaths.

Thus, these men became our first “firemen” and the first of a long list of courageous firefighters. Their heroic efforts were recognized by fellow crusaders who awarded each with a badge of honor- a cross similar to the one firefighters wear today. These Knights of St. John lived for close to four centuries on an island in the Mediterranean Sea named Malta, thereby the cross came to be known as the Maltese Cross, the firefighter symbol of protection.

The Maltese Cross is a firefighter’s badge of honor, strength and courage.
